Show Mini Movie Guide Postscript on the Academy Awards Steven Spielberg is the most successful filmmaker and perhaps the best director direc-tor in the history of the medium. "Jaws," "Close Encounters," "Raiders of the Lost Ark," "Poltergeist," and "E.T.," are among the top moneymakers and "E.T." is the most loved film ever. Why didn't "E.T." win Best Picture or Best Director Oscars? In our opinion, there are three reasons: 1. Directors of "Das Boot," "Tootsie," and especially "Gandhi" faced special challenges in the creation of those films. What they went through to get their -stories on the screen, would make for exhaustive, ex-haustive, incredible storytelling. 2. There were two best pictures "Gandhi" and "E.T." the voting must have been very close but only one could win, since there is little chance of a tie among 4000 votes cast. 3. Cynics point to Spielberg's age, 34; he was only 26 when he directed "Jaws." They say he's too young. If you say "So what," I agree. But there were other inconsistencies in-consistencies in the nominations, as well as the awards. "The Chosen" wasn't even nominated for anything, and "The Verdict" was considered by the Academy to be a better film than "Of-ficer "Of-ficer & Gentleman." "O & G," to be sure, contains very strong material, but that wouldn't bother the academy; and "The Verdict" is slightly less well-acted than "O & G" and contains some glaring legal flaws. Someday Spielberg will receive just recognition from the Academy. In the meantime, his works remain the overwhelming over-whelming favorites of the vast general public he serves. . .. 18th.
