Show Former Vernal dentist dies in Nevada Dr. Wallace Soffe Calder, former Vernal Ver-nal dentist, passed away April 4, 1983 at Winnemucca, Nev. He was born April 10, 1902 in Vernal. He was the son of Pontha and Rosella Calder. He graduated from high school in Vernal and received a BS degree from BYU in 1924. He received a DDS degree from Loyola College of Dental Surgery in 1931. In 1933 he completed pedodontic specialty at Forsyth Dental Infirmary. He practiced dentistry in Vernal until 1941, when he moved to Winnemucca, Nev. He retired in 1977. Mr. Calder married Doris May Alexander Alex-ander in the Salt Lake City LDS Temple Sept. 6, 1928. He is survived by four children, Joan Dufurrena, Dr. James Calder, Lois Baum of Winnemucca and Wallis McGhie of Reno, Nev. Also survived by six grandsons, four granddaughters and five great-grandchildren, brothers and sisters, Harold and Clive Calder of Bountiful, Boun-tiful, Edgar Calder of Vernal, Samuel of Los Angeles, Calif., Mrs. Ruth Vurkham of Reno, Nev., and Dona Abegglen of Vernal. Dr. Calder was active in community affairs. He was a member of the Humboldt Hum-boldt County Board of Hospital Trustees for many years. During and following World War II he served as an ansestetist at the hospital and took his turn driving ambulance. He was president of the Nevada Dental Society in 1960. In 1971 he was a member of the Humboldt County Democratic Central Committee and was elected "Democrat of the Year." He was appointed by the governor of Nevada to the Cancer Council and the Comprehensive Comprehen-sive Health Council. Funeral services were at the Winnemucca Win-nemucca LDS Chapel, April 9, 1983. Conducting was Vera Anderson. Lewis Abegglen gave the opening prayer. Helene Malpass, organist, played "Somewhere My Love." A letter from Ralph Siddoway was read by Howard Calder. Blair Johnson and Richard C. Stratford spoke. Bishop Terry Berogan sang, "Going Home." Paul Mortenson gave the closing prayer. Harold Calder dedicated the grave. Burial was in the Winnemucca Cemetery. Pallbearers were John Dufurrena, Quinn Dufurrena, Joe Dufurrena, Mac McGhie, Wallace Baum and Tom Dufurrena. Dufur-rena. Honorary pallbearers were Dr. George Weiss, James Callahan, William Hooft, Ralph Roberts, Vern Schoenfeld, Dr. Frank Rueckl, Felix Scott, Hollis Chatwin, Lay Legarza and John Marvel. |
