Central students please BYU crowd of 1 ,500 Fifty-three Central School fourth graders, "brought the house down," said their principal, Roger Beckstead, about their performance at the Brigham Young University Spanish Fair. During the year, students at Central Elementary have been learning Spanish greetings and songs. Miss Jane Ramsey and Donna Nelson, fourth grade teachers, conducted the Spanish instruction instruc-tion in their classes. Funding for a Spanish textbook was acquired through the Gifted and Talented program, said Beckstead. "For what the students learned and the welcome they got, I think the trip was worth it," said Beckstead. Students sang "Eres Tu," for about 1,500 people during the introduction to the BYU Language Fair. At the Spanish Fair, students were given passports to enter. After they accomplished a certain task, such as changing money, making purchases, or getting their picture taken, the passports were stamped. Students needed five stamps on the passports before they were allowed to leave. "It was harder on us than the students," Beckstead said, "because we couldn't speak Spanish." Anyone caught speaking English at the fair was taken to jail by the police. After the Spanish Fair, students visited the Monte Bean Museum on the BYU campus. For most fourth graders, it was their first overnight stay away from home. All but six fourth graders at the school made the trip. it.
