The Uintah Utes will compete in the 3-A State Tournament, Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Union Cougar grappiers mmh 2nd place ejtf region meet The Union Cougar matmen collected second place honors in the Region 9 and 10 Tournament at Lehi, Friday with a total of 115 points. Lehi placed first at 165 and Wasatch netted third place at 107 points. Three Cougars, Bardett Fausett, 98; Jeff Samuels, 105 and Brian Hamilton, 138, netted first place crowns. Fausett captured first place when he blanked Canittiawa of San Juan, 6 to 0, in overtime. Fausett gained a takedown and a two-point near fall in the first round for a 4-0 lead, but the San Juan tussler acquired a 5-4 lead with a three-point three-point near fall and a two-point near fall in the second round. Fausett gained a stalling point to send the contest into overtime. Fausett gained a takedown in the first round and a reversal and a two-point near fall in the second round. Fausett pinned wrestlers from In-termountain In-termountain and Lehi in the first two rounds of the meet. Samuels blanked a wrestler from San Juan, 6 to 0, for first place. Samuels gained a takedown in the first round, reversal in the second round and two-point two-point near fall in the third round. Samuels had a bye in the first round and he beat Tonks of Morgan, 6 to 2. Samuels had a 2-2 record in matches with Tonks before the region meet. Tonks' only losses have been to Samuels. Hamilton pocketed first place in the 138 pound class when he edged Phil Gardner of Wasatch, 6 to 5. The match was tied at 0-0 after one round of action. Hamilton jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the second round on a takedown and a two-point two-point near fall. Gardner gained a three-point three-point near fall to tie up the contest at 4-4, 4-4, but Hamilton pocketed a reversal for a 6-4 lead. Hamilton let Gardner up with five seconds left to win by one point. Hamilton pinned his first two opponents. Farrell McCook. 112; Brent Cundall. 132 and Lorin Anderton, 145, placed third for the Union Cougars. McCook toppled Morgan's Wilkinson, 7 to 4, for third place. McCook had suffered five losses in a row to Wilkinson. Cundall was nipped by a Wasatch tussler, 5 to 4, in the first round. Cundall defeated the Wasatch matman three times during the regular season. Cundall pinned tusslers from Lehi, San Juan and Morgan and placed third. Anderton captured third place when he decisioned a tussler from Emery. Cary Horrocks, 155 and Shannon Rhoades, heavyweight, placed fourth. The top four wrestlers in each weight from the Region 9-10 Tournament will compete in the 2-A State Tdurnament, Friday and Saturday at Richfield. Delta placed first and Hurricane netted second place in Region. |
