In the 1977-78 racing season in chariot racing, the Woehrmann's won the Uintah Cutter Futurity in Roosevelt at Petroleum Downs Race Track. Al breaks, trains and drives the team he races. In this particular Futurity, he also placed 4th in the race competing against 16 other teams. In the 1978-79 year of chariot racing, they won the Futurity for that season with a team that had 9 wins and no losses. Al also had a Derby Team in the same Futurity that placed second. Leola and Al went to state championship cham-pionship cutter races for the 1979-80 racing years. Al competed against approximately 180 teams at the Utah State Cutter Championship. When the horses come out of the starting gate, the chariot is airborne for 25 to 30 feet. Al states, "It is a challenge to take a green colt in the spring and start breaking him. With cutter racing you can raise your horse and do all of the work on him yourself. Flat saddle you have to hire someone to ride the horse. Cutter racing is for fun. It's a hobby sport that I enjoy doing in winter." "I go and watch. It is exciting to watch the chariots come out of the starting gate and the chariot is airborne," air-borne," commented Leola. Out of the 32 teams that compete in cutter racing on the Roosevelt track, 3 teams come out of Vernal. There is no money involved with winning in cutters. Prizes are generally trophies or blankets. Oil field work, cattle business and ranching have been the Woehrmann's vocation while in Vernal. The Woehrmann's Woehr-mann's cut down their cattle business by two-thirds five years ago to devote more time to their hobby of horse racing and chariot racing.
