(g? eDossne sirwirD Salt Lake City professional James Blair added a pro title to the amateur crown he nabbed a number of years ago as he fired an 8 under par score of 136, which netted him top honors in the Superior Tire-Bridgestone Golf Classic i at the Dinaland Golf Course in Vernal, Saturday and Sunday. Blair's 136 total J tied the golf classic mark, which was set by Jack Sommers in 1978. A $1,200 purse was garnered by James Blair. Blair was one stroke behind the first day 'leader, Kim Thompson of Cedar City.! Thompson shot a 68 on Saturday and Blair was in second place with a 69. t Jon Mauss, Vernal pro; Mac Christensen. Salt Lake City; Don Branca, Salt Lake City; Greg Harmon, Colorado and Bob Droz, Price, were in third place with 70's. Kim Thompson had the lead in the tourney at times in the first round on Sunday, but Thompson and Blair were r tied for first place at 5 under par after the first' hole on the final round on Sunday. Blair picked up a birdie on number two and an eagle on number three. Salt Lake City's Blair moved to a 9 under par with a birdie on number seven, and bogey on number nine gave Blair a final score of 136 and 8 under par. Blair posted a 36-3369 tally on Saturday and had a 33-34-67 score on Sunday. Chip Garriss, Provo professional and Mac Christensen, Salt Lake City amateur, tied for second place honors at 140. Garriss had rounds of 35-36-71 and 35-34-69, and Christensen fired scores of 35-36-71 and 34-35-69. Professionals Tommy Williams, Ogden; Kim Thompson, Cedar City and amateur Vance Christiansen, Salt Lake City, tied for fourth place' at 141. Williams posted scores of 34-37-71 and 36-34-70, and Thompson, who was the first round leader on Saturday at 34-34-68, fired a 34 on the first nine and then fell apart the second time around for a 39 and a score of 73 on Sunday. Christiansen had scores of 34-36-70 and 36-35-71. Vernal's Jon Mauss and Orem's John Evans tied for seventh place at 142. Mauss was only two shots off the lead after a 34-36-70 performance on Saturday, but a 37-35-72 round- on Sunday knocked him out of contention'.-Evans contention'.-Evans posted rounds of 37-34-71 and 36-i 35- 71. Mike' Malaska, Salt Lake Cy pro! captured ninth place at 144. Malaska had rounds of 39-35-74 and 34- 36- 70. Pro golfers Joey Bonsignore, Alpine and Greg Harmon, Pagosa Springs, Colorado, tied for tenth place at 145. Bonsignore bad rounds of 36-37-73 and 36-36-72. Harmon posted rounds of 33-37-70 and 37-38-75. Hnlc, Colorado pro, Steve LaDonne, Brad Fleisch, California, and Sonny Braun, Springville, tied for 12th place at 147. LaDonne posted scores of 35-38-73 and 38-36-74. Fleisch fired rounds of 38-37-75 and 37-35-72. Braun had rounds of 37-36-73 and 35-39-74. Milan Swilor, Salt Lake City captured 14th place at 148 and Bob Droz, Price; Don Branca, Salt Lake City and Steve Booth, Salt Lake City amateur, netted 15th place honors at 149. Swilor shot scores of 35-36-71 and 38-39-77. Droz posted rounds of 35-35-70 and 40-39-79. Banca had scores of 35-35-70 and 42-37-79. Booth had rounds of 39-32-71 and 38-40-78. The professional division standings were: James Blair, first; Chip Barriss, second; Kim Thompson and Tommy Williams, third; Jon Mauss and John Evans, fifth; Mike Malaska, seventh; Greg Harmon, Joey Bonsignore, eighth; Brad Fleisch, Steve LaDonne, Sonny Braun, tenth; Milan Swilor, 13th and Bob Droz, Don Branca, 14th. Ralph Emery of Park City won the senior division. Dick Kramer of Salt . Lake City placed second and Ed Vardon, Green River, Wyoming, placed third. Craig Hart won the amateurs' closest-to-the-hole contest on number nine as he came within 3 feet and 1 inch of the hole. Greg Harmon won the pros' closest-to-the-hole contest on number nine at 3 feet 10 inches. Both players won Bridgestone Steel belted radial tires. |
