Cowgirls The Uintah Utes' junior varsity girl cagers pocketed two close triumphs as they nipped Grand Junction Central, Friday, 46 to 44, and edged Meeker, 30 to 29, Saturday in Vernal. Uintah leaped out to a 12 to 6 lead in the first quarter. Meeker's Holtzberlin stole the ball and put in a layup for a 15-14 15-14 Meeker lead in the second quarter. Uintah's Heidi Green tossed in one free throw to tie the game up at 15-15, and Kim Hamberlin put in a free throw with 35 seconds left to give Uintah a 16 to 15 lead at the end of the first half. Meeker went to work in the third quarter as they scored three field goals and one free throw, for a 22 to 16 Meeker advantage. Kim Hamberlin and Heidi Green zeroed in on the basket for field goals, which cut Meeker's lead to two points, 22-20. However, the Cowgirls gained a two-pointer for a four point lead. A field goal by Susie Feltch chipped Meeker's four point lead to 24 to 22 at the end of the third quarter. Uintah's Kim Hamblin tied the game up with a field goal early in the fourth quarter and the Utes' Irene DeLambert broke the tie with a two-pointer. Meeker flipped in a field goal and a free throw by K. McDermott gave the Cowgirls a 27 to 26 advantage. The Utes' Lynette Merrell tossed in a field goal for a 28 to 27 Ute lead, but a free throw by E. Strang tied the game up at 28-28. Meeker's LaCroix converted con-verted a free throw for a 29-28 lead, but Chantae Julius connected a layup for a 30-29 Ute lead with 2:05 left. Meeker's LaCroix stole the ball, but was unable to put in in the hoop for two points and the final score was: Uintah, 30 and Meeker, 29. The top scorer in the game for Uintah was Heidi Green with nine points. Also scoring counters were: Kim Hamblin, 6; Lynette Merrell, 6; Nanette Mc-Curdy, Mc-Curdy, 3; Chantae Julius, 2; Irene DeLambert, 2 and Susie Feltch, 2. Scoring points for Meeker were: E. Strang, 12; Holtzberlin, 6; LaCroix, 4; McDermott, 3 ; Perkey , 2 and Tucker, 2. Uintah hit 10 field goals and put in 10 our of 25 free throws. Uintah had a 13 to 6 lead at the end of the first quarter, and had a 29 to 19 lead after two quarters of action. The score at the end of the third quarter was: Uintah, 38 and Grand Junction Central, 25. The Warriors outscored Uintah, 19 to 8, in the fourth quarter, but the Utes won the game, 46 to 44. Scoring points in the game for Uintah were: Kim Hamblin, 15; Nanette McCurdy, 12; Heidi Green, 8; Lynette Merrell, 8; Irene DeLambert, 2 and Chantae Julius, 1. Uintah hit 16 field goals and put in 14 out of 33 free throws. Central's top scorers were Trinklein, 13 and Sutherling, 8. Grand Junction put in 17 field goals and converted 10 out of 23 free throws.
