Show Hanksville news notes By Barbara Ekker Mr. and Mrs. Ronald Livengood of Pleasant Valley, Missouri, and their three daughters, Vickie, Michelle, and Kathleen are visiting Mrs. Livengood's sister and husband, hus-band, Vickie and Ken May. They have enjoyed a tour of the Henry's with a stay at the May Cabin and water skiing and boating on Lke Powell. John and Juanita Evans of Elko are enjoying a week's vacation here with their daughter, Ingrid, and husband, hus-band, Marty Lampman and family. They participated in the July 4 preparations and have been able to get in some lake fishing and boating. Juanita is a registered nurse at the Elko hospital. Mr. and Mrs. Charles Noyes spent the 4th weekend in Showmass, Colorado, with her parents, the C. H. Phillips. They even were honored to ride the Senior Citizens Float with her parents in the holiday parade in Aspen. A drowning occurred at Hite late Wednesday when a young man in his 20's and three friends were swimming near the Marina. He reached the 5 mph bouy and then went under. His friends made a frantic search and then summoned sum-moned help. His body was discovered by divers the next day before noon near the Marina. Charlie and Alice Hunt returned to Hanksville to pick up their trailer at the Jess Ekkers Wednesday after spending spen-ding the holiday in Taylors-ville Taylors-ville with their children. While here they were interviewed by John Mann, geologist with the BLM, about new developments develop-ments since Hunt's Professional Profes-sional Paper on the Henry Mountains was printed in 1953. The Hunts will go on to The Natural Bridges area to continue their work with the USGS. Mr. and Mrs. Roy May and daughters. Mr. and Mrs. Morris Quarnberg and children, child-ren, and Mr. and Mrs. Dean Jewkes and family from Green River spent the 4th in Hanksville and participated in the events of the day where Dean won in the dune buggy hill climb. Mr. and Mrs. Jay Ekker and family of Green River, Utah and her sister from Tennessee spent the holiday in Hanksville with the Riter Ekker family. The Don Ekker family. Granger, Gran-ger, and Phyllis Blackburn and daughters. Green River, Wyo., were also home guests. A special "JOB WELL DONE" goes out to all the groups and individuals that made the 4th activities a great success. La Vor Wells directed the entire affair and got the greatest support from his wife, Susan, his brother. Don and his wife. Sharlet. and their children. Rod Seller was in charge of the Hill Gimb and did a great job. This event each year has been handled by Rod and has become very competitive with drivers from all over the area. Steven Hatch look charge of the Drag Races and as usual did a superb job. The PTA Members really were hustling to get enough food to the Town Hall to get the masses fed that evening. Tom Campbell was the 'early bird' of the day getting the Scouts rousted and breakfast started and the flag raised before 6 a.m. Kerry Bruce Ekker and members of the Sportsmen Club kept the sandwiches made and the pop cold for each event all day so the crowd wouldn't get thirsty or hungry with his Snack Wagon'. Carl and Jan Hunt kept the kids entertained with a 'fish pond' in the back of their truck that also appeared at all events. The Pistol and Rifle Shoot, a new event for the 4th celebration here, was well received and a large number participated. Roy Ekker of Payson took the most time to fire as he entered with his cap and ball musket, but his shooting was among the top scorers. The sad event of the dav happened early when the blasts of I NT were set off and blew the picture windows and bedroom windows out of the Horace Ekker home. These blasts' are a common occurrence occur-rence over the years, and this one just happened to have been set off to close to town. Mrs. Etila Allen spent the 4th holiday in Moab with her daughter and family, the Verell Wyatts. Their daughter is engaged and to be married in the near future and will be moving to New Mexico. The fourth of July dawned w ith explosions of dynamite on Rookie Hill and woke the residents. These explosions readied them for the day's events which were under the direction of La Vor Wells and were a great success. Scout Troop S8 began the day w ith a flag raising at sunrise. Hrcaklast followed, sponsored by the Scouts, and ISO people were fed hotcakes. scrambled eggs, juice, milk, and coffee. A tiymkyana followed at the airstrip south of town.
