It seems that our poaching problem has increased in the last month or so. As a result a stiff anti-poaching campaign is underway. Since time of day and type of vehicle seems to be irrelevant most all vehicles that I come in contact with will be stopped for an initial contact. This way I can obtain better knowledge of whose seeing any poaching evidence and possibly whose transporting illegal game. The total number of poaching poach-ing losses would astound most of us. Like the doe shot last week. That animal had at least one fawn and most likely two that will die due to lack of milk. Convicted poachers can expect heavy court penalties since the unlawful taking of Big Game is a Gass "A" misdemeanor. Maximum criminal cri-minal penalties are Sl'.OOO in fines, 1 year in jail, equipment used in the taking and transporting of the animal confiscated by the court, and loss of hunting privileges for 5 years. After criminal court the State of Utah will most likely sue in civil court for the replacement cost of the animal or animals lost this is up to $1 ,000 per animal. We cannot afford to provide poachers with big game animals if we expect wildlife populations to increase. If you happen to see a poacher taking game, please obtain the vehicle license number then contact me at home or through the sheriffs office. If you want your identity to remain unknown, that's okay. I will attempt to give the maximum rewards to individuals indivi-duals that provide information leading to the arrest and conviction of wildlife violators. Wc can't afford poaching losses if wc expect big game populations to increase and wc do. -gkc- Thc general deer hunt is Oct. 22-Nov. 1, archery deer is Aug. 20-Scpt. 5, and muzzle-loader muzzle-loader deer season is Oct. 1-11. Stamp collectors as well as conservationists conserva-tionists and waterfowl hunters can purchase this stamp for a S5 bill well spent. Revenues from the stamp are used to buy additional wetland habitat under a program of the Department of Interior's U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Two million acres of prime waterfowl habitat has been purchased under this program already. Non-hunters who also enjoy the wildlife resources through bird watching, photography, and other activities are being encouraged by the Interior Department to contribute to U.S. conservation by buying the collector's stamp. --gkc- Fishing on the La Sals is still holding up. During early mornings and late afternoons success rates are excellent. At midday the catch rates drop off. Fly fishermen that can match the hatch will find no problem limiting out. Beaver lake on the south end of the La Sals needs fishermen. This one-time beaver bea-ver pond is full of trout and lacking in water. Save a trout from summer kill, fill a limit and provide your family with fresh trout fish Beaver Lake. -gkc- Outdoor tips (1) Olive bottles bot-tles make safe egg carriers; A safe way to carry fresh eggs on i short camping trips is to break 'them into narrow five or six-ounce olive bottles. Although the suspect hasn't been apprehended yet, the tip has led me to more evidence in this case. Both Utah and Colorado wildlife personnel are watching watch-ing for this individual now. Sportsmen, like Sporstmen of Week Calvin Oliver, can help save and increase big game populations. |
