Show MONKS ENLISTED "IN PLAGE FIGHT CHICAGO, Dec. 9 UPl Fifteen Rhesus monkeys were brought here from the east by plane today to be used by bacteriologists seeking the cause of the virulent intestinal disease dis-ease that has claimed the lives of 11 babies at St. Elisabeth's hospital since November 23. The monkeys, imported from India, were obtained by the Chicago board of health from a New York City animal dealer. Dr. Herman Bundesen, president of the health board, said they were essential for experimental purposes. Yesterday he appealed to persons owning monkeys to donate them to the cause of science. 'The inoculation of white mice, which we used, showed a virulent form of the disease," he said. "How-aver, "How-aver, the experiment was not as successful suc-cessful as we hoped. The mice are too far removed physiologically from the human race. Tests on the monkeys may reveal the cause of the disease." Eight infanta still suffering from the disease at St Elizabeth's were reported to be recovering. |
