Show - . Return With Laurels THE return from California of the 145th field artillery and the 222nd field artillery, as well . as the field hospital stationed at Ogden, has f sr more significance than would simply their re-turning re-turning from their usual summer training camps at Jordan Narrows. Their participation in the large maneuvers "in the vicinity of Atsscadero gave them a severe test in field efficiency under conditions simulat-ing simulat-ing actual war as closely as possible. It broad--ened their knowledge, gave them an appreciation of organization and teamwork in military operations, op-erations, revealed the necessity for discipline, heightened their self-reliance and gave them in all ways a complete picture of whst it takes to make a soldier. This was at the cost of hardship and sacrifice even if it was mock war. It is to be believed that these Utah guardsmen managed to find relaxation from ordinary civilian duties, enjoyment and fun between times and on leave periods and that they developed comradeship going beyond that possible even in their more frequent associations in their home communities. Officers and men alike have every reason to be proud of the excellent showing they made .in the field. Major General Simmonds singled them out for special praise for the conduct of the long march from her to San Luis Obispo, the car and condition of their vast amount of -costly materiel, their high degree of training and .efficiency, individual and organization discipline disci-pline and their intelligent and effective performance perform-ance in the big maneuver. They were part of .'the largest concentration of troop ever held on the Pacific coast since the World war. To be elected as among the best troops engaged earns them the respect and praise of the townspeople of the communities in which the units are stationed sta-tioned and of the people of the state generally. |
