Show Dixie Bibb Graves Takes enateJDlathBlaiiSworn WASHINGTON, Aug. 20 (UP) Dixie Bibb Grave. tall, smiling southerner with a bouquet of gardenias at her shoulder, today took the oath of office as the fourth woman member of the United States senate. Mrs. Graves was Inducted Into office by Vies President John Nance Garner and will take tha aeat va-oaUd-WhsiLHilgqLBlackAla-bama Democrat, who resigned to accept appointment to tha supreme court. The Induction ceremony came soon after Black's office announced that he had taken the oath of office as supreme court Justice and would take his place on the bench at the beginning of the tribunal's October term. Mrs. Graves, appointed to the senate sen-ate seat by her husband. Governor Bibb Gravea of Alabama, will serve until a new senator is elected next year. There were reports ahe might seek the post herself. Black was sworn in shortly after he submitted his resignation from tba aenate to Governor Graves. He will take another oath of office of-fice before the supreme court in October. |
