Show HELP FROZEN-IN WHALING SHIPS Expedition Will Start Out From Dawson; Mounted Police to Help. SEATTLE. Wash., Nov. 17. Dr. Antone Varicle, prime mover in the proposed Yukon Yu-kon Polar expedition, will as soon as he reaches Dawson, for which town he starts from Seattle tonight, take steps to organize an expedition for the relief of the whalers imprisoned in the ice in the vicinity of Herschei island. The expedition expedi-tion to be led by Dr. Varicle will probably prob-ably travel in company with the detachment detach-ment of the Northwest Mounted Police - which is to start for Herschei island and Fort McPberson December 15. While in San Francisco Dr. Varicle held several conversations with the owners and agents of the vessels which are imprisoned im-prisoned in the northern ice, and he expects ex-pects that these firms will provide the funds necessary to outfit an expedition of the character proposed. The distance from Dawson to Herschei island is approximately S00 miles, and Dr. Varicle expects that it will take from thirty-five to forty days to make the trip. While in San Francisco Dr. Varicle was told bv the owners of the whalers which are In' the ice that Dawson was the only point from which a relief party could start with any hope of success. |
