Show Postmen wanted legislation holding dog owners responsible ''for the biting of postmen." (The man who wrote the Gazete some time ago citing the vicious dogs he encountered on his morning walks would appreciate this). The postman's lot is not an easy one and he has always been poorly paid. Only the other day a news story of the retirement of a mail carrier in another state illustrated this fact. He had become a regular regu-lar carrier in 1909, at an annual wage of $800. Salary increases, the story stated, had brought his annual an-nual stipend after 37 years "to almost $3,000." The postman is probably one of the most unappreciated of public j servants. POSTMEN LISTED 4 AS FORGOTTEN PUBLIC SERANTS When lost branches of the National Na-tional Association of Letter Carriers Car-riers throughout the country recently re-cently listed a number of requested request-ed reforms which would make the mail carrier's work easier, some writers were disposed to treat the list in a humorous vein. A few observers somehow thought it funny that postmen were asking that their daily loads be cut to 35 pounds. (Did you ever .notice that veteran postmen "wear" one should lower than the other, the one that has carried tons of magazines and catalogues in addition lo the lighter missives? |
