Show tire United States according- to a public ' health report dated July 28, 1948: -Currently, 983 capfis were reported for the country as a whole, as compared with 717 last week, 154 in 1947; 668 in 1946 and a 5-year median of 369 for the corresponding- week. The total to date is 4,586, as compared compar-ed with 1,573 in 1947; 3,260 in 1946 and a 5-year median of 2,018 for the corresponding period." These figures for Utah are somewhat suggestive of an epidemic epi-demic but are not by any means conclusive. Poliomyelitis at best is a highly unpredictable disease and therefore, we hesitate to make any prognostication at the present time, health officers state. HEALTH OFFICERS COMMENT ON CURRENT DISEASES Physicians and local health officers of-ficers have reported a total of 140 resident cases of notifiable diseases diseas-es to the state department of health for the week ending July 30, 1948. There were 149 cases during the previous week and 115 for the corresponding week last year. Most of the communicable diseases have shown a decrease as compared with previous weeks. Notable exceptions include diphtheria diph-theria and poliomyelitis. . This week ends the first seven months of 1948 and Utah has had a total of 23 poliomyelitis cases reported, including four resident cases this week. That number exceeds ex-ceeds the average of 20.2 cases for the first seven months of the four epidemic years of 1939, 1943, 1945, and 1946. Ten cases have been reported during the month of July as compared com-pared with the July average of 8.2 cases for the four epidemic years.
