Show EDITORIAL: Why Was the S.H.S. Opera Cancelled? We were sorry to hear this week that the high school opera, "The Lucky Jade", has been cancelled just when we thought we were going to see and hear something really' worthwhile. Probably more disappointed, disap-pointed, however, were the boys and girls who had learned their parts and even those who had not worked so hard, must have felt just a little "let down." Seems like a long time since the high school really put on a honest-to-goodness high-class opera. One which gave the students and parents something to talk about for weeks ; one which entailed the making of scores of beautiful costumes and the hiring of elaborate creations; one which the students would rather rehearse than to come home for dinner. Some individuals venture the opinion that there isn't sufficient talent in the high school to produce an opera. This we know to be utterly foolish. There is, in the opinion of most folks, just as much talent and even more than ever in the high school this year. There are some very fine vocalists and quite a number are taking private vocal lessons and have done so for quite some time. Production of an opera would give these students' a chance to exhibit their ability and give them the experience they need. It is not fair to students to eliminate production of an opera any one year in high school. It is one of the things to remember. It is an accomplishment. Surely times haven't changed so much that a musical production such as "The Red Mill", "Once in a Blue Moon," "Mikado," "The Chocolate Soldier," and that never-to-be-forgotten, "Bobbie," original composition by that fine director, Clair Johnson, can not be produced again. If there is a logical reason why we can't have an opera produced by the high school music department, we would like to know it. Otherwise we are prone to believe many of the comments we have heard from townsfolk of late as to the reason. |
