Services for the baby were con-I con-I ducted in the First ward under : direction of Bishop J. E. Bird. I Funeral services were held in 1 the First ward Sunday for Mrs. I Verona Clegg, widow of Isreal Clegg, who died at the home of a daughter, Mrs. Wallace Clegg, following a month's illness. The farmers of this vicinity have refused to grow tomatoes for $10 per ton, the price offered by state canners. There is no disagreement about peas however, the same price as last year, $65 and $48 for earlies and $60 and $38 for lates will be paid. Work began Monday on repairing repair-ing of the Springville city water pipe system. The pipe was bought by the city and has been arriving all winter and being laid on the streets on which the repairs are to be made. The line on the west side of Main street was selected for the beginning of the work. The Kiwanis voted this week to get behind the baseball team in Springville and place a first class team in the league. Miss Alzada Wilmott, who isjn a mission in Indiana, has been given special permission to visit Nauvoo, according to word received re-ceived here. Mr. and Mrs. Rufus Averett entertained en-tertained at their home Thursday evening at an old-fashioned candy pull. Guests were, Mr. and Mrs. J. C. Mr. and Mrs. Victor Phillips announce an-nounce the arrival of a baby girl March 7. The new girl is the first granddaughter in the Phillips family. $ 20 YEARS AGO ... Following a custom of the past few years of each high school class electing a candidate for art queen to unveil the prize picture at the close of the exhibit, each class this week named their candidate. Lucille Johnson will represent the seniors; Ardith Madsen, the juniors; jun-iors; Melva Jenkins, the sophomores; sopho-mores; Naomi Tew, the freshmen; Mina Crandall, the eighth grade; Marian Smart, the Seventh grade. Arthur Hughes of Springville and Louis Johnson of Mapleton received sweaters at the BYU award day program last week and Paul Thorn of this city received a blanket. Johnson and Thorn received re-ceived their awards for varsity football and Hughes for freshmen football. Complimenting her little son Eldon on the occasion of his 11th birthday, Mrs. Willis Dibble entertained en-tertained at a birthday at i their home in Mapleton Thursday afternoon. after-noon. The high school opera, "The Gypsy Rover," promises to be one of. the outstanding musical entertainments enter-tainments of the season, under the direction of Albert Swenson. V. Cornell Mendenhall has charge of the lighting effects; A. E. Jacob-sen Jacob-sen and Wayne Johnson, scenery. Blaine Thorn and Robert Urqu-hrat Urqu-hrat are stage managers and Sterling Ster-ling Noakes, art manager. The cast principles are: Evelyn Boyer, Hazel Anderson, Helen Carnesecca, Elaine Bird, Ernest Boyer, Grant Palfreyman, Merrill Harris, Roe Thorn, Jack Cherrington, Robert Lyall, Robert Urquhart and Dick Wightman. The high school Boosters club will entertain at a good luck banquet ban-quet for the basketball-team Thursday Thurs-day evening. The team took the district and will leave next week for the state tournament. Mar-jorie" Mar-jorie" Wheeler will give a toast "To Victory;" "Bett" Weight, to the Tournament;" Marie Simkins, Success." Verl Whiting and Rex Sutherland will give a pep stunt and clarinet duet. Elwood Hall has returned from the LDS hospital, where he has spent nearly a year as a result of a broken leg. He will return to the hospital within a month. Tryouts for a tennis team at the high school are being held under the direction of Earl Groesbeck. 15 YEARS AGO' . . . Maurice Bird has been reappointed reappoin-ted watermaster for the Springville Spring-ville district with Earl Smith appointed ap-pointed deputy. Work of clearing Hobble Creek and other channels for water began this week. Complimenting her six year old son Sterling, Mrs. L. E. Ottesen gave a birthday party for a number num-ber of friends Saturday. St. Patricks Pat-ricks colors were used in the refreshments re-freshments which were served to Merlyn Groesbeck, June Wignall, Maxine Claudin, Dianne Dicksori, Glenna Hatch, Donald Levy, Robert Rob-ert and Jimmie Thorn, Robert Hales, Keith and Junior Ottesen. Mr. and Mrs. Howard Vane of this city announce the marriage of their daughter Ruth, to Dee Richardson Shurtleff son of Mr. and Mrs. Arnold Shurtleff of Oakland, Oak-land, California. The ceremony was performed by Wm. Wainwright at the home of the bride's parents. Dinner was served later. The couple will honeymoon in California Calif-ornia and make their home in Springville. The Third ward chapel was crowded to capacity and many were unable to get into the services ser-vices for J. W. Whiting, Monday. Mr. Whiting died Friday in a Salt Lake City hospital, following a major operation. Approximately 200 farmers and Kiwanis club members are expected ex-pected to attend the annual banquet ban-quet Thursday night in the Second Sec-ond ward. Mrs. Vernon Condie and baby have arrived in Springville from Afton, Wyo., where Mr. Condie is teaching school. Steven Miller underwent a major operation last Wednesday at the Aird hospital in Provo. |
