Show LEGION GREETS JI1JWTI Pershing Honored at Great Reception in Madison Square Garden. t I NE7V VOUK, Sept. 11. "Tho American Legion welcomes you, (leip-ral fershlng, on account of your potential usefulness for the present- and tho future." With these words Colonol Luke I.ea, former United States senator from Tennessee, Ten-nessee, turned with outstretched arms toward General Pershing at the legion's mass-meeting and reception to him in Madison Siiunre Garden tonight and bade him welcome homo In the iiamo of tho organization. Ten thousand men and women?- members mem-bers and guests of the legion, sprang to their feet and cheered as General Pershing Per-shing rose to speak. The uproar continued con-tinued for several minutes. Il was the culminating event of a full day for tho general. I lo departs for Washington tomorrow morning. In his address General Pershing said ho was "glad to encourage the American Legion as long as it stands for true Americanism Amer-icanism as long as it keep its skirts free and clear from petty politic. "And with that understanding." he continued, "1 shall be giad to encourage It In every way. The American Legion should cherish and foster the lessons n patriotism which have been brougiit home to the A merlcan pcop'.o during tno last two years. "This organization possesses great advantages ad-vantages for the display and exercise of the same patriotism with which Its members mem-bers have been Imbued in their service abroad and at home, and it Is the hope of all of us who are interested in the welfare of this organization that you enter it with the eame integrity of purpose pur-pose with which you conducted yourselves in the war. I "Our country is founded on laws and ! not on men, and it should be the purpose of this organization to- stand on government govern-ment by law based tipon the principles of the constitution. I should deplore It !f there were any chance of the American Legion becoming a political tool in the. hands of political aspirants.'' |
