DEATH VALLEY JIM SCOTT had the hardest work in the world in getting the ball over the plate yesterday; but ho didn't need any control to beat the Bees. Jim felt his lack of government so keenly that ho voluntarily relinquished the job in tho sixth inning to Tom Seaton. The Seals won the game by a score of 7 to 4, the identical figures which ruled in Wednesday's nine. Tho two clubs had nnother voluminous day afoot. Seven fat errors were marked up, four against 'Salt Lake and Ihrco against San Francisco. The two nines have made fourteen errors in two days, which ought to satisfy the most exacting. Bees Lack Punch. The Salt Lake side had numerous chances to score, but they fizzled miserably miser-ably when the opportunities -were bright est. In the second inning they had the bases full with none out, and in tho third they had two on with nono out. yet in neither case wer- they able to knock tho ball out of the infield. in-field. About the only comfort the local fans got out of tho came was that Sheely got four hits; mebbo he's started again. The Seals made their hits count fairly well for run-making, although, seeing the opposition they had, they weren't called upon 10 exert themselves greatly. Eddie Mulligan and Marty Krug knocked the ball out of the lot for Salt Lake, and Jimmy Caveney broke it over for San Francisco. Krug wins a ton of coal, his second in two days, and .Mulligan draws a box of candy. Sheely hit the "shirt sign" and is thereby enabled to adorn himself with a brand new piece of scenery. Water Leverenz started the pitching for Salt Lake. 3?he Seals met him vigorously and the support behind him was of that order that micht be described de-scribed as "fierce." Cliff Markle took over tho burden in the fourth and held tho opposition to two runs thereafter. there-after. The Seals have won two of the three games of tho series thus far played. Five remain. Seals Open Noisily. The visitors scored thrice in the first inning. With one out, Corhan got away Willi ' a popper over third. Hunter's double to right put Corhan on third. Koerner drove the ball into left, where t it eluded Mulvey and went for a two-bncger, two-bncger, both scoring. Caveney flied out; Johnson dropped Schick's pop fly, and Koerner scored. Caveney knocked the ball over the fence in the third. Kamm's two basger, a double out and Fitzuerald 's single gave the Seals another in the fourth. Sheely 's double, a walk and a hit batsman filled the bases for Salt Lake in the second, with one out. Mulvey struck out and Leverenz grounded out. Johnson and Magijert drew passes to start tho third inning. Krug's out put them up a .base. Bumler hit a fly to left, which Hunter muffed but recovered recov-ered in time to fling Johnson out at the plate. Sheely struck out. And that's about how things went all the way through. The Bees made their first tally in the fourth, when Mulligan knocked the ball over the left field fence. Krug's homer gave them their second tallv in the fifth.' In that innintr Sheely singled and went to second on Hunter's error. A wild pitch put him on third. Mulligan walked and stole second, but Spencer struck out. Tho Seals fattened with two in the seventh. Fitzgerald fouled out as a starter. Then Corhau, Hunter and Koerner singled in succession, the first named scoring on Koerner 's hit. Caveney Cave-ney forced Koerner, scoring Hunter. Caveney 's grounder was hit to Mulligan, Mulli-gan, who failed to field cleanly, otherwise other-wise Hunter would have been an easy out at the plate. He escaped an error by retiring a runner at second. To make the situation more interesting, Krug threw tho ball away in an effort to complete a double plav, permitting Caveney to go to second, and he advanced ad-vanced to third on a wild pitch. He died there, however, when Schick flied to Rumler. In Salt Lake's half of the seventh, Maggert hit safely to right. A wild pitch put him on second. He ventured off, and Anfinson, running to within twentv feet of second, took careful aim and flung the ball into center field. It was an amusing occurrence. Eumler's hit scored Maggert. Sheely again hit safely, but Mulligan and Spencer were fly-outs. Maggert 's hit, an out and Sheely 's drive to the "shirt sign" gave the Bees one in the ninth. The clubs will play again this afternoon after-noon at 3:30 o'clock. There will be double headers Saturday and Sunday, beginning at 2 o'clock. |
