I BILLY EVAKS OH THE WORLD'S SERIES ry HE next big number on the sports program is the world's series, Unless -L all the players of both these elubs fail down and break their necks or their les or their arms, the Cincinnati Reds and the Chicago White Sox will engage in combat for the 1919 world's championship in baseball. The series this year v.'ill be on a nine eame basis. Heretofore it has been on a seven-game plan. The two additional games have been added to give the clamoring public a chance to see the best ball clubs in the universe play ball. In order that The Tribune's readers may have the benefit of expert views on the strength and weaknesses of the two clubs, we have contracted with Billy Evans, celebrated American league umpire and writer on baseball topics, to supply us with a few pieces from his facile pen. Billy will indite ten articles. In these he will discuss the different phases of the series. Evans's articles will begin next Sunday morning, September 1, and will continue up to the eve of the struggle. He will take up the world's series in this order: 1 "How Do They Do It?" a closeup sketch of Managers Pat Moran and Kid Gleason. 2 "The Value of Pitching," a comparison of the stars who will probably work in the big series. 3 "The Most Valuable I layer in Baseball," an intimate impression of Eddie Collins of the White Sox. 4 "What Part Do the Catchers Play?" some interesting dope on the men who will direct the action on the ball field. 5 "Getting the Breaks," showing how little things often upset surefire sure-fire predictions. 6 "What About the Hitters?" Nothing interests the fan more than hitting.. This article 'deals with some of the greatest hitters in the game, who will meet in the big series. 7 "The Strain of Playing in a World's Series." How the athletes feel and act in the baseball classic. 8 "Upsetting the Dope." How the White Sox and the Beds fooled the critics. 9 "What About the Fielders?" An article dealing with the fielding ability of the rival stars. 10 "Who Will Win the Series?" being Evans's opinion on the j probable outcome. I |
