The South Shore Country club of Chicago, Chi-cago, 111., where the nineteenth grand American handicap trapshooting tourna-ment tourna-ment will take place on August 5, 6, T, S and 9, is a $2,000,000 proposition. It is the finest metropolitan town and country ! club in the world. The story of the South Shore Country-club Country-club reads like a tale from Arabian Nights. About a dozen years ago a number of Chicago sportsmen purchased five acres of sandy beach on Lake Michigan, adjoining ad-joining Jackson Park on the south, and built a clubhouse. That was the beginning begin-ning of the South Shore Country club, ft was indeed a happy thought. The club was a success from the start. Prosperity Pros-perity made it possible to purchase more ground, and with additional land came more beautiful clubhouses. Today the South' Shore Country club extends for three-quarters of a mile along Lake Michigan, covers sixty-seven acres of ground, and the grounds and clubhouses club-houses are classed am&ng the show places of America. The main clubhouse, which ' was opened New Year's night, three years ago, is 550 feet long, covering a ground area of 90,000 square feet, and cost $430,-000. $430,-000. The vast acreage is dotted with other ! fine clubhouses for the shooters, golfers and bathers, for there are traps, golf links, tennis courts, bathing beaches, a riding irack, in fact, facilities for every outdcor sport. The South Shore Country club is at the end of the ten -mile drive over the boulevard through Washington and Jackson Jack-son parks. There is no finer drive in the world than the one on the club grounds. The membership is about 2500, and the flues amount to about $200, 000 yearly.' The operating expenses of the club are about . $240,000, of which amount about $170,000 , is in salaries. |
