I Tomorrow, August 5th, 1918, the New Contract for Hauling All the j Garbage of Salt Lake City I Goes Into Effect DAYS OF COLLECTION. Tlio week days iu tho residence district on which your garbage has been collected will remain the samo until further notice. Collections will be made daily in tho business district and from certain apartments and boarding houses outside of tho business district. SEPAKATION. Tho city ordinance requires and demands that your eatable garbage be separate from your waste matter. H Tut in one can, such as is required by the city ordinance, which is a rain-proof, fly-proof metallic receptaclo, with proper cover, and which, when filled, shall not exceed 100 pounds in weight, including weight of receptacle, all garbage, paper in which garbage is encased, swill, animal and vegetable refuse, such as scraps from the table, decayed and unsound vegetables, meat, fish and fruit. Put in another can or receptacle all ashes, tin cans, bottles, rags, leather and snch waste matter. Such tub, can or receptaclo shall not exceed in weight 100 pounds. j Put your coffee grounds in with your ashes. j The gaibage utilization division of the United States government is asking and demanding that house- holders do not bum their garbage. What few scraps you have from preparing your meal or left on j Ithe plates, wrap in paper and put iu tho proper can. ) AUTHORIZED COLLECTOR OF GARBAGE. No one except the city's licensed contractor is allowed to collect or handle any garbage from any resi- donee, hotel, restaurant, eating house, meat market, fruit stand, produce, house or any other place, where food is prepared for human consumption within the city limits of Salt Lake City. Tractically tho com- j mission or common council of every largo city in the United States has entered, or is entering, into a j similar contract. The right to so do has been sustained by tho United States supreme court. j JUSTICE HARLAN OF THE SUPREME COURT OF THE UNITED STATES, Record 199, U. S., 330 and j 331, says: . 3 "It is well settled that no one mnv claim damages because of enforced obedience to a police regulation, j designed to secure ami protect public health. It. is manifest that were individuals permitted to escape 3 the regulations fixed bv the common council and depose of the garbage as they severally saw fit, all J svstem in the collect ion and removal of refuse matter would be destroyed. The court may well take ju- i dicial notice that table refuse when dumped into re.-opiacles kept for that purpose will speedily fer- k meut and emit noisome odors, calculated to affect the public health. If, m providing against such a U nuisance, the owner of snch material suffers a slight loss, the inconvenience or loss is presumed to bo j compensated in the common benefit secured by the regulations. ' ' j SPECIAL SERVICE. i Under the terms of the contract made bv the Citv of S;tlt Lake, all garbage within the city limits will j be collected free of charge.
