Show JERRY DOWNS GIVES BOYS FATHERLY TALK Special to The Tribune. . FRESNO, March 5. Rain last night threw a decided chill Into the air this morning, but Jerry Downs got a hunch that it might be worse in the afternoon, so he took his brave Seals out for a work out Oils forenoon. He guessed right, for rain this afternoon made practice out of the question. Manager Downs has warned the youngsters young-sters to take things easy, and in a fatherly father-ly talk he told them he had seen a lot of morning glories, and had seen many a promising young player spoiled because he cut loose too soon. He Is going to carry the hoys along easy and get down to hard work next week. Biff Schaller and John Hummell should grab jobs as fly-chasers, and Goldie may be the third man If he gets in and drills hard. Ed Roland, the Fresno boy, who is trying out as a catcher, sprained -his ankle an-kle this morning and will be out of it for a while. Koerner is oVerdue, Corhan is expected tomorrow, Hummell should be here Sunday Sun-day and Spider Baum will come as quickly quick-ly as he can get away from his work on the draft board in San Francisco. |
