Show EX-G01GT HELD 0! DEFRAUDING CHARGE J. M. Howry Arrested as He Leaves San Quentin Prison; Pris-on; Wanted Here. As he stepped from the state prison at San Quentin, Cal., a few days ago, where he had served one year for embezzlement committed in California, J. M. Howry was arrested on a. warrant issued from the office of the United States attorney In this city, and he will at once be returned re-turned to Salt Iakc to answer a charge of using the United States mail for the purpose of defrauding. After a somewhat spectacular careei in San Francisco, where he posed as a mine owner and capitalist. Howry turned up in Salt Lake in the early part of 191H. He is alleged to have fraudulently persuaded per-suaded J. W. Barnard of Ada, Okla., to purchase an interest in mining property which, it is charged, he never owned or was interested in. "While In San Francisco, Fran-cisco, it is alleged, he represented to Mr. Barnard that he was interested in a number num-ber of Nevada mining properties, and that he was organizing a company to take them over as a consolidation. It is alleged al-leged that he Induced Mr. Barnard to advance ad-vance him sufficient money to come to Salt Lake to straighten out certain legal matters, and while in this city wroire to Mr. Barnard asking him to buy a half interest in the proposition. It later developod, it is alleged, that he was not the owner or in any way interested in the mining property. The indictment of Howry followed in November, 1916, and on arraignment he was released on furnishing a bond in the sum of SlOuO. He then went to San Francisco, Fran-cisco, where he embezzled a small sum of money and landed In San Quentin. I He was released from prison January IS, but was at once rearrested. |
