Show rU. DF U. FORMS PLAN TO TRAIN DRIFTERS ! Entire Institution May Be Given Up to Military Instruction. If plans now under consideration by the war department are carried out, the University of Utah will become a training train-ing school for hundreds' and perhaps thousands of men called into service under un-der the second draft. A. C. Carrington, hea-i of the extension department of the university, last Saturday sent word to Washington that the local school could accommodate easily from 500 to 1000 men and this number could be still further increased if the local industrial concerns would co-operate. It is the plan of the war department to select the most promising of the drafted men and to give them special training in the universities throughout the country which will fit them for technical tech-nical service in the army. It is believed that the local university is admirably situated to carry on this work since the men taking the training could live in the barracks at Fort Douglas Doug-las and til us spare the government the expense of constructing additional living quarte rs. Another feature of the plan is to close the regular school term in May, and from that time until October to give up the entire institution to the training of soldiers. sol-diers. The mining and engineering school of the University of Utah has won a considerable con-siderable reputation for the high type of instruction given here, and since these are the lines in which the government desires to train its men, the advantage of location is still further increased. The courses would last eight weeks, and , six days to the week, with instruction ! continuing all clay long. Each school would be assigned certain subjects to: teach and the method of teaching outlined. out-lined. By following this method of intensive inten-sive training hundreds of thousands of men could be instructed in a few months tn all the universities of the country. President John A. Widtsoe of the University Uni-versity of U tah is willing to give the fullest co-operation to the government In case it decides to utilize its educational institutions for the proposed training. In case the work is taken up at the local school it will probably be conducted by the extension department. |
