Show fDR fill on Formal Inauguration of the Fourth Liberty Loan Drive Occurs Today. WOMEN ARE LEADERS Banks in Downtown Section Sec-tion and Other Corners to Be Busy Spots. Imbued with patriotic enthusiasm, the Liberty loan organizations of Salt Lake have resolved that today, "Volunteer day." which marks the opening of the fourth Liberty loan, shall see the most sensational record ever made by the city In raising war funds. By tonight, it Is predicted, a large share of Salt Lake's quota o the loan, amounting to $10,21-,-700. will have been secured. To the women will fall a large share of the work to be accomplished today, aJid their bank at Second South and Main streets will be a center of activity. Although Al-though the bank has done brik business since its unofficial opening, Thursday afternoon, it formal opening will take piaco at 1 2:5' o'clock today. Immediately afterward the world's greatest clown, "Tote."' now playing at the Orpheum. will make a tour of the women's booths in the business section, accompanied by a band furnished by the Salt Lake Federation of Musicians. This tour is expected to last about half an hour, after which "Toto" will return and perform on the porch of the bank. Addresses Scheduled. The band will play one or two patriotic selection?, after which Brigham C;egg will deliver an address on Liberty bonds. Later in the afternoon addresses will be stiver, by Private Cree. who,-Iost an arm at the battle of oissons. and who has a vivid Store of war experiences to tell, and by Cliff Thompson of the Wilkes Players. In the even ins: the Odeon orchestra, or-chestra, under the directiciT of E. G-Wetzel G-Wetzel 1, will commence play in s at T:St in front of the bank, after which will come several speeches and other special features, until the automobile parade, which commences at S o'clock. Then, In the words of Chief of Folice Parley White, the "lid"' will come off bait Lake and enthusiasm will run riot. Every motor car in Salt Lake is expected to form a line along Er.st South Tejnple and march west to Main street, south on Main to as far as is necessary, thence east to State street and north to South Temple. This line of march will be followed fol-lowed for an hour, with hundreds of high school and university students cheering end renins' at tne top of their voices. Anything in the way of a demonstration is oermitted tonight, because of the confidence con-fidence in the success of the "Volunteer day" drive. Comrade Club to Aid. During the day young women of the comrade club will swarm through the streets of the business section, stopping every citizen who does not wear a Liberty Lib-erty loan button, and seiiing him some bonds. These young campaigners have been fu Hy organized in the work and are prepared to make a drive of overwhelming over-whelming force. Booths have been erected erect-ed in various parts of the business section, sec-tion, and these will serve the girls as headquarters. Instead of having the giris carry forma! for-ma! applications for Liberty bonds, ihey have been provided with receipts which they can give in return for first payments on subscriptions. These receipts, !n the form of coupons, will be redeemable at designated pias. This measure is calculated cal-culated to make the taking of subscrip- , tions simple and speedy. ' Plans Are Complete. All women canvassers are Instructed to report to their chairmen by 3 o'ciock exactly how many bonds they have sold. It Is hoped to make an announcement tomorrow to-morrow morning regarding the subscriptions subscrip-tions received up to the close of "Volunteer "Volun-teer day." Lester P. Freed, city campaign manager, man-ager, completed all arrangements last night for a vigorous campaign of the men's committees during the day. He said they had already accomplished a tremendous tre-mendous amount of work, and he looked for some magnincent totals today. He ui-zes all business houses which have not yet reported 100 per cent to do so at once, in order that as many honor emblems es possible may be displayed In the windows win-dows of the business section. Beginning tonight. Sweet's Candy company com-pany will donate its pign above the. old Walker Bank building at Second South end Main street-s for the purpose of flashing flash-ing a Liberty bond message. |
