Show MORE NURSES WANTED. While it is possible for the government govern-ment to raise an army of any desired ?ize under the selectivo draft law, and to obtain a supply of doctors in tho same manner, it is not so easy to get nurses for overseas duty. Thero aro plenty of women in tho country who would be only too glad to nurse wounded wound-ed and sick soldiers, but on account of lack of experience and for othor reasons they are not available and a shortage exists. According to the Washington dispatches 900U more qualified nurses must bo secured before tho first of the year, and oven now some of them are badly needed. Before tho first of next July 34,000 more will be needed. Acting Act-ing Surgeon General Richards calls attention at-tention to tho fact that propagandists ' have been circulating stories to tho effect ef-fect that tho Rod Cross has enrolled 27,000 nurses In responso to a call for 25,000. While it is trile that 27,000 women havo enrolled with tho Red Cross, this number does not mean thnt many of them aro available for duty, according to the head of tho government govern-ment medical department. Many of those women are in training, however, and it is quito possible more of them will bo available than General Richards Rich-ards snpposos. In any event, they will havo to he taken as a last resort if enough, capable nurses do not volunteer in tho meantime So far the nurses havo mado a remarkably good allowing, and, wo dare say, tho stato quotas will lo filled. Utnh, at least, will not fall down in this respect, judging by past performances. 'Wo havo ns much oon-fidonen oon-fidonen in our girlH us in our boys in time of war, and wo wish morn of tho former wore trained nurses at this timo when the hospitals aro being fillod with Amoriea's fighting men. |
