Show LE CATELET LINE Americans Take Defenses of Hindenburg System Near St. Quentin; British Reach Objectives on-Wide on-Wide Front in rCa.m brai Advance. LOKDOX, Sept. 27. American? operating operat-ing on the extreme right of the British this morning captured a series of trenches and fortified farms forming the outer defenses of the Hindenburg system southwest of Le Catelet, north of St, Quentin, according to the official report from Field Marshal Haije; tonight. The text of the report follows: "Portions of our flrr and third armies, under the command respectively of Generals Gen-erals Sir Henry Home and Sir Julian Byng, attacked this morning before dawn on a wide front in the general direction of Cambrai. "Notwithstanding the great strength of the enemy's positions, especially in the northern sector of the attack where the Canal du Nord and open ground sloping slop-ing toward the enemy rendered our advance ad-vance most difficult, all our objectives have been reached. "Farther north the fifth division- captured cap-tured Beaucamp and, combining with Lancashire men of the Forty-second division, di-vision, have cleared Beaucamp ridge, which runs northeastwards toward Mar-f Mar-f 1 coing. Flesquieres Taken. "On the right center, guards and the third division of the sixth corps under General Haldane, breaking through the enemy's defenses east of Havrincourt, carried the village of Flesquieres and gained possession of a long spur which runs eastward from that village toward , Marcoing. i "On their left Scottish and naval units of the seventeenth corps, having stormed ! the line of the Canal du Nord east and j southeast of Moeuvres. were at first I checked by the defenses of Graincourt. i Outflanking this village from the north they seized Anneux and carried forward the whole front of the corps. "On our extreme right American detachments de-tachments captured a series of trenches i and fortified farms forming the outer defenses de-fenses of the main Hindenburg system southwest of Le Catelet. "Substantial progress has been made toward Raillencourt and Haynecourt. j Co-ordination Good. j "Our deep advance astride the Arras-Cambrai Arras-Cambrai road was gTeatly assisted by the close co-operation of the twenty-second corps under General God ley, south and north of the Sensee and Scarpe rivers. "The fifty-sixth London division of this corps crossed the Canal du Nord, and, attacking northwards, has captured Sauchy, Lestree and Sauchy-Caucy. "North of Scarpe on the extreme left English and Scottish troops completed the capture of Arleuz-en-Gohelle and the German trench system in the vicinity of that village. "Perfect co-operation between the cont- . Vnanders of neighboring units and formations; forma-tions; between infantry, artillery, tanks and aircraft, together with the gallantry gallan-try and resource of all the ranks have again enabled us to achieve complete success at relatively small cost. Several Sev-eral thousand prisoners and many guns have been captured." The report from Field Marshal Haig tonight gives the first intimation received re-ceived here that American troops were operating in the St. Quentin sector. At the beginning of the offensive, however. American troops were brigaded with British around Arras, but have not been mentioned in the fighting since then. |
