Show ANOTHER FIASCO. Senator Jones of New Mexico, who has charge of the woman suffrage resolution reso-lution in the senate, was wise in not making any positive claims when the date was set for taking a vote, for wheu the time arrived a count of noses developed devel-oped the fact that the suffragists were in the minority. This necessitated an- j other postponement. It is expected that action will be taken Monday after the arrival of Senator La Follette, who will vote for the resolution. The outcome out-come remains in doubt. Some of the southern senators are opposed to giving the ballot to negro women in spite of , the fact that we have hundreds of thousands thou-sands of negro soldiers on the firing line who show the same fearlessness in battle as their white brothers, and who will play an important part in the winning win-ning of the war. Other southern seua- tors are not so narrow m tueir views. MeCumber of North Dakota, who is opposed op-posed to suffrage, will vote for it because be-cause his state favors it, while Pomer-ene Pomer-ene of Ohio, heretofore an ardent supporter sup-porter of equal rights, will turn up on the negative Bide because the Buckeye state has voted that way. These facts developed during tha debate on Thursday. Thurs-day. At the same time Senator Freling-huysen Freling-huysen of New Jersey made a silly speech in opposition, which caused much laughter on the floor and in the galleries. We should not like to see the resolution defeated, but we think it high time for the senators to quit ducking duck-ing and dodging and take a vote on this all-important question. If defeated at this time it will come up in the next congress, and it will pass without doubt. Then the women will have an opportunity to eliminate some of the short-sighted senators from public life without regard to party. |
