Show RAILROADS PREPARE HUGE TROOP TRAINS More Than a Million Men Are to Be Transported. Trans-ported. Umler the direction of the railroad war board the railways of the country are actively niaring preparations to handle, during the next thirty days, the greatest troop movements in the history his-tory of the United States. Preliminary instructions and an outline of the tentative ten-tative plans for the handling of the troops have been received by local railroads from the office of Fairfax : Harrison, chairman of the railroaa war j board. j The board now is arranging schedules i for the movements of the troop trains j from more than 400 points in the conn- j try beginning September 5. In all 087,- 000 men of the regular establishment and approximately 350,000 national guardsmen are to be transported to j concentration and training camps. The movement of the regular establishment estab-lishment has been segregated into three parts, the first division of 200,000 men to start moving September y. It is estimated es-timated that this movement can be cared for in about five days. The second sec-ond movement of 200,000 is scheduled to start September 19 and be completed September 23. The last division is to start moving October 3. As a hint with reference to the mag-' uitude of the service the railroads will be called upon to perform during this-gigaiitie this-gigaiitie movement, Mr, Harrison points out that to move one field army of 80,-000 80,-000 men there will be required 6229 cars, necessitating the operation of 30b' trains from point of origin to destination. destina-tion. As many of the movements will be for considerable distance it is estimated esti-mated that the engines and crews required re-quired will be more than double the number of trains. |
