"War and preparedness in general, and the sentiments voiced at the patriotic mass meeting held at the tabernacle Monday night in particular, were the objects of vehement and unqualified denunciation de-nunciation by speakers at the anti-war demonstration mado at Unity hall last night under the auspices of the Socialists Social-ists of Salt Lake. Arraigning the orators at the tabernacle taber-nacle meeting, Bishop Paul Jones of the Episcopal church declared that, though he had been asked to refute the arguments argu-ments they presented, he had found no arguments to refute. The one thing that stood out at the tabernacle meeting meet-ing he said, was the lack of any real reasons for war given by those who spoke. Stand by President. He asserted that the mass meeting resolved itself into an emotional appeal to induce people to enlist in a movement move-ment which was by no means popular. Bishop Jones drew an analogy between be-tween conditions as they exist today and as they were felt in the times of George Washington. He declared that even as George Washington was denounced de-nounced for his pacifistic tendencies in times past, so the people of today should have the courage to speak out boldly for peace, even in the face of captious criticism. "I believe that we should stand by the president," declared Bishop Jones. "But we should not forsake the high ideals we have always held. The president presi-dent is still in a position, to keep us out of war. Guns, Powder and Swords. "There is still time to appeal to him with sentiments other than those fostered fos-tered by hot-headed pseudo-patriots of today. We have advanced beyond the point of speaking of democracy, loyalty loyal-ty and patriotism in terms of guns and powder and swords." Bishop Jones read a telegram sent him by the Emergency Peace federation federa-tion at Washington, which, is making mak-ing arrangements for a peace demonstration dem-onstration to be given at Washington in the near future. The telegram asked for a representation from Utah to be S resent at the demonstration. Bishop ones said that, although "Utah could not send a representation, the sympathy of the audience assembled could be expressed. ex-pressed. Audience for Peace. He asked all of those who sympathized sympa-thized with the cause of the Peace federation to raise their hands. Practically Prac-tically everybody responded. Emil S. Lund then arose in the audience and made the motion to send a telegram of approval to Washington. It passed unanimously. Bishop Jones assured the audience that he would send a telegram immediately after the meeting. "Be patriotic to your country; whose country? ' ' asked C. T. Stoney, state secretary of Utah Socialists. "I have better use for my sons than to give them to a country which belongs neither to them nor to me." Adopts Resolution. Pi. D.
