Show BEET6R0WEHS t 8USBMEETI Special to The Tribune. SPANISH FORK, March 27. Between Be-tween 400 and 500 farmers and beet frowers living in the district tributary to the sugar factory located at this place attended a mass meeting at the opera house yesterday afternoon to discuss dis-cuss the beet growing industry and to decide upon the acreage to be planted in this district for the season of 1917. The farmers have thus far been backward back-ward about signing up for the required acreage, and this meeting -was called by the officials of the Utah-Idaho Sugar company in an attempt to reach an understanding un-derstanding between the company and the beet growers. The rating was addressed by Gen-raJ5ricultural Gen-raJ5ricultural Manager Mark Austin The company upon the general sub-ject sub-ject of soil fertility preparation of jLMie land so as to get the best results also advised every farmer, where poss'-i to increase his beet acreage. JamfcBH. Gardner, general manufacturing manufac-turing superintendent for the company, said the Spanish Fork factory was second sec-ond to none in the whole intermountain territory and could take care of more than 7000 acres of beets. He urged the farmers to make their acreage sufficient to run the factory at its full capacity. Perhaps the most vital question discussed dis-cussed at this meeting was that of a branch railway to be exclusively a beet road, with several dumping stations for the better accommodation of the growers in Palmyra, Lako Shore, Ben-inmin Ben-inmin and other outlying territory. The officials of the company said the road would surely be ready to handle the 1917 crop. The matter of a second branch railway rail-way up the river bottom from Spanish Fork to Mapleton was informally discussed, dis-cussed, but no action was taken. However, How-ever, realizing the needs of the growers grow-ers in this limited district, the company will place a dump station at McBeth, a station on the Orem road, half way between Spanish Fork and Springville, and another on the same road two miles south, half way between Spanish Fork and Salem. |
