Show SALT LAKE Mil TO ATTAGKUVOK COST Commission Plans to Provide Pro-vide Funds to Encourage Truck Gardening. LOTS ARE AVAILABLE Resolution Will Be Presented Pre-sented at Today's Board Meeting. Ab a means of helping to crowd the 5-cent potato and the 15-cent onion oft the market in Salt Lake county. It will he proposed before the board of county commissioners this morning that steps be taken to Insure the planting of every tillable foot of ground In the county. A resolution designed to lend the assistance as-sistance of the county government, together to-gether with needed funds to the furthranee of agricultural Industry will be introduced bv -Commissioner C. F. Still-man. Still-man. The financial aid proposed Is de-stsned de-stsned to Insure seed for planting in cases where but for such assistance the ground would be left lying idle. That there is sufficient ground not cultivated for years past to produce the additional produce necessary to take the edge off the high cost of living for a great many people so far as garden and agricultural products go ia the conviction of Commissioner ScJllman. He has become be-come convinced, however, that without encouragement many persons having opportunity op-portunity to do gardening or even farming farm-ing on a small scale will neglect to undertake un-dertake the venture and the season will have passed without the taking of the needed toll from the neglected tracts that might be made more attractive, as well as productive, if converted to agricultural agricul-tural purpose a Many Available Lots. "In looking about the county, both In the city and outside, I was surprised to tee how many small tracts of land have gone uncultivated for years past, though fitted for raising such things as are now commanding extortionate prices." said Commissioner Stillman. "The amount that may be raised upon the pieces of ground would be sufficient to materially lift the burden of food cost from many of those upon whom it is resting most heavily at the present time. Not only would early garden truck come as a boon to many households in which the grocer's bill has become an ail-too serious problem, but the relief accomplished would extend through the summer season and into the coming winter if the gardening can be launched upon a practicable basis under proper direction." To Ask Moderate Funds. The resolution to be proposed by Commissioner Com-missioner Stillman will provide that the county horticultural inspector shall be instructed in-structed to collaborate with the county farm demonstrator in assisting all who need it In launching the gardening venture ven-ture so that success can be assured If the proper attention is given the undertaking under-taking in each instance. The resolution does not suggest how much of an appropriation should be voted by the county for the furthering of the community soil redeeming, but rather leaves it to the judgment of the board of commissioners. The probability Is that if the resolution meets with the approval of the other members of the board a moderate appropriation will first be provided pro-vided and further provision made if there is need and the venture is giving promise of success. Resolution Ready. Following Is the resolution prepared for presentation this morning: Whereas, Realizing the increase In the cost of food and prospects for higher prices, and the scarcity of a great many farm and garden products prod-ucts that could be raised successfully on small tracts of land that are and will be vacant and uncultivated in this county; and Whereas, That through an organized organ-ized effort a large amount of foodstuffs food-stuffs can be produced that will relieve re-lieve the distress of a large number of poor; Now, therefore, be It resolved, That this board appropriate (in their Judgment) Judg-ment) a sufficient fund to be used to encourage, instruct and, where necessary neces-sary , furnish seed to those In need; and Be it further resolved, That as planting time is near, we instruct the county horticultural inspector to immediately im-mediately co-operate with the county coun-ty farm demonstrator to supervise and encourage the planting and cultivating cul-tivating of the vacant tracts of land as a relief to the poor. |
