Ready to open the season against Portland next Tuesday, the Salt Lake Saints arrived here today en route to their homo city. Manager Bernhard. who has yet to make his first appearance In this city at the -head of the club, deserted his men shortly after their arrival. He left for Ontario to visit his relatives. The players left tonight at 8 o'clock for Las Vegas, where an exhibition game will be played tomorrow. A game is also planned for Thursday at Mllford. Led by Morris Rath, speedy third sack-er sack-er of the club, a party of Saints visited Maier park, Vernon, and broke up the signal practice of the Vernon club. Manager Man-ager Stovall called off signal work as soon as he learned the Saints were In the park. "We will have a fast club this year." said Rath. . "Bernhard figures the club will be at least 26 per cent stronger than last year. "We have two good infield prospects in Third Baseman Kearns and Shortstop Carpenter. Pitchers Bliss and Jones look good, and Bernhard will probably carry them." Rath was surprised to learn that he had been mentioned as a possible member of the Vernon club this year. The Saints' infielder spent the winter in Philadelphia. He says he will retire from baseball after this year. Outiielder "Buddy" Ryan will captain the Saints this year. |
