Patrick Boland, C. M., of Philadelphia preached his first nermon in the mission "which, is being gi-eo in the Catholic Cathedral of the Madeleine Made-leine by three Vincentian priests. Father Fa-ther Boland arrived yesterday from San Prauciseo, accompanied by the Rev. Patrick Flannigan, C. M., who also will assist in conducting the mission. The Very Eev. Frederick Matine, C. M., arrived ar-rived last Saturday and opener! the services. Father Flannigan also spoke briefly last night before the regular sermon of the evening. Tonight Father Flannigan will preach a sermon at 7:45 iTck on the Catholic doctrine on jniarriage. Last night at 7:25 o'clock in the cathedral rectory Father Irvine opened the course of instruction which is to be given for the remainder of this week and all of next week for non-Catholics non-Catholics who are interested in knowing more about the doctrines of the Catholic Cath-olic church. Father Maune explained that the course of lectures for non-Catholics non-Catholics was not intended solely for converts, but also was tor those who often express a desire to hear more from an authoritative source about the doctrines of the Catholic church. There was a large attendance at the class last evening, and it is expected that the attendance will be even larger tonight. "Sin entered the world, and with sin came death as a punishment," said Father Boland last night in opening his sermon, on "Death and the Judgment." "Life is like a cloud that swiftly passes overhead and is then seen no more. We cannot tell how or where or when we shall die. And the uncertainty of death is the reason why people should use untiring energy in preparing for it. "We are warned that 'it is appointed appoint-ed unto all men once to die; ano after death, the judgment.' livery one of you some day will die: and immediately then you will stand before the judgment seat "of God to render an account of your life. Remember death tand the judgment, and you will never' sin. Of all things in thi's world there is nothing bo terrible as the death of a sinner. "It is not your religion that will save you. It is the living up to the laws of God. Remember the judgment you must face; remember hell, the terrible ter-rible punishment God has for the wicked, and the thought will force you to observe the laws of God, and thus you will save your own soul. Meditate evr dav on the death and the judg-Tent, judg-Tent, anJ the thought will stir you up jto renewed zeal and to renewed service V ' for God." |
