LEFT JAW IS BROKEN Falls Nearly Two Stories, but Is Expected to Recover Re-cover With Treatment. Frightened at the starting of an elevator, Miss Marian Klein, 17 years of age, uf Baltimore, a guest at, thii Nfiwhousn hotel, yesterday plunged headlong down au elevator nhat'r. in the Walker bank building, curlier Second South and Main streets. Sho fell about one and one-half glories, landing on her left iaw, breaking the jaw hone in several places, bruising herself about tho head and body, and escaping death in a miraculous manner. man-ner. The accident occurred at 3:50 o'clock vestei tluv afternoon, in elevator shaft "No. 4, " tho farthest south in the building. The elevator operator says MihS Klein was standing by tho elevator eleva-tor when he descended. He opened the door and discharged his passengers, and tlio elevator was not quite level with tho door. Ho was bringing it even with the floor when Miss Klein suddenly sud-denly stepped in. Feeling herself lifted, she "lost her .balance, became alarmed, grabbed the operator, pulling him to his Uneeg and shook his hand from the lever. Attempting to stop tho machine, which was rapidly going upward, the operator saw Miss Klein plunge over the edge of the elevator and drop into tho darkness beneath, from about the top of the first, or ground floor. Doctors Soon Arrive. When he got control of the ear, the operator, assisted by other employees of tho building, went down to tho basement, base-ment, where tho girl had fallen, and found Miss Klein, bleeding profusely from the mouth and chin, in a dazed condition. The management of the Walker bank building immediately called for the emergency ambulance, and telephoned for Dr. Ralph T. .Richards. The emergency emer-gency hospital was also notified to send fur the city physician, and both arrived almost as soon as Miss Klein was brought in .by the ambulance. Miss Marian Klein is a beautiful young woman. She came to Salt Lake from Los Angeles two weeks ago. She roomed at the Nowhouse hotel, where, with her roommate, Mrs. M. Zimnion, she was preparing to g'o on the Orpheum circuit, Mrs. Ziunnon being a singer and Miss Klein an accompanist. They had planned on putting on their act in about three weeks, and in the meantime tho young woman had secured se-cured a position at Keith-0 'Brien 's. and was to have begun work this morning. morn-ing. Will Get Heritage. Miss Klein is an orphan. Her brother, T?. M. Klein, lives at Fort Worth, Tex. She will come into a heritage on her eighteenth birthday, October 20, 191(5, and was on the way to consult 'her lawyer, law-yer, L. K. ClufT ot' tho firm of Gustin, Gillette & Brayton, when the accident occurred. L'pon a cursory examination the doctors doc-tors found that she had a multiple fracture of the jaw, a 'd& scalp wound and several abrasions of the .body. It is thought that there are no internal injuries, and she will probably recover. Since the Walker bank building was opened, four years ago, it has carried over SOO,UL)0 passengers on the elevators, eleva-tors, and this has been the first serious accident. |
