After three days of ferocious fighting General Cadorna's troops have broken through the Austrian third line In the Monfalcone region and success Is reported by the Rome war office of-fice along the entire line of attack. Tonight's official report says that "wherever the enemy penetrated our first trenches he was driven out again." Italian Ital-ian attempts to advance on the Fassane ridge are described as fruitless. The Italian war office this afternoon reported the capture of a whole series of Austrian positions from Oppachiazella southward through Pietra Rossa. The Austrians were driven from a number of dominant heights holding up the Italian advance along the Vallone. The Koelnische Zeltung says the present pres-ent fighting on the Italian front is com-I com-I parable to nothing previously witnessed in that theater and is as furious as that on the Somme and comparable to the fighting in the last Russian offensive. The paper's correspondent says General Cadorna has adopted the tactics of General Gen-eral Brussiloff, attacking a short front and hurling thick Infantry masses into battle. |
