Show Fleetfooted Johnny Kane Becomes Saint Jt J tf Herb Murphy Becomes Full-winged Angel JOHNNY KANE. HERB MURPHY. lltffis'iil 1 I f If III mm! I!. ' r 11 A DEAL of vast importance to the Salt Lake club was put through yesterday by Managers Blanken-ship Blanken-ship and Chance. The deal was a trade whereby Salt Lake acquires Johnny Kane and Los Angeles acquires Herb Murphy. The swap becomes effective at once. Kane will be in the outfield for Salt' Lake today. He will play right if Buddy Ryan is able to get back; otherwise, he will be in left. .There is a possibility that Jimmy Shinu may get back today, aa his game leg showed unexpected improvement im-provement yesterday. Dick Bay less, Blank's outfielder from the Arizona Copper league, is due to show up today or tomorrow. With Kane and Bay less on the job and with the three old regulars right side up again, the Saints will be well supplied with outfielders. Kane also plays a smart infield, aud it is probable that he will don the toga of utility man. Kane was with Vernon last year and for several years prior to that also. He I was with the Chicago Cubs for a spell.) He is a very fleet runner and an alert ball player. Last year he led the out- i fielders in fielding. In 131 games he had j 22G putouts, sixteen assists and four er I rors. He batted in 138 games, made sixty-one runs and 124 hits, ten of which were three-baggers and twenty-six were two-baigers. He hit one home run. His fielding average was ,98-i and his batting average was .200. Ho had ten stolen ba?es and fourteen sacrifice hits. This year Kane was sent to San Francisco Fran-cisco and later was traded to Chance for Catcher Clarence Brooks. For the .Seals and also for the Angels Kane was frequently fre-quently used at third and short and gave a good account of himself. He makes himself very popular with the fans, and no doubt, will quickly have a large following fol-lowing in Salt Lake. Dick Bavless is also a former Vernon player. He was field captain of the Tigers under Hogan ad-To-'a ' thne after the latter's death was manager of the club. When Patterson took charge Bavless was sold to the Wichita club of the Western league, but he refused to report going to the Arizona league j for the time being. j Bayless fielded in 173 games, dur-J ing which he had 347 putouts, twenty- i six assists and fourteen errors. lie batted .2bS, his record showing sixty- two runs tind 159 hits, of which, eight ; were triples, one a homer and twenty- i four were doubles. He had fifteen j stolen bases and sixteen sacrifice hits. ; Bayless is a left-hand hitter and Kane ib a right-hand hitter, so Blank will have batters for either kind of pitching. Herb Murphy, who goes to Los An : geles in exchange for Kane, was obtained ob-tained from Spokane last winter and 1 joined the club in the Modesto training! camp. He has been used at second, at j short and at third. Manager Chance said yesterday that! the deal was off wherebv'he was to get InfieUler Kenneth Nash" from St. Paul. In the event that he does not get hold of .a high-class shortstop Chance will, probably fill out the season with Butler j and Murphv at short. By turning Kane '. over to Salt Lake, Chance loses a utility util-ity outfielder, but has already an extra hand in Charlie Jackson. |
