Show MATTHEW HALE IS AGAINST HUGHES Declares Progressive National Committee Commit-tee Lacked Authority to Indorse. NEW YORK, July 7. Matthew Hale of Boston, active chairman of the Progressive Pro-gressive national committee, made pub-lie pub-lie today a statement to delegates of the Progressive national convention, criticising tho indorsement of Charles E. Hughes by the commit toe. Ho lias i conferred recently with Vance McCor-mick, McCor-mick, chairman of the Democratic national na-tional committee. Mr. Hale said tho indorsement was without authority from the delegates qt tho state organizations and without any attempt to get authority. Ho asserted that neither delegates to the convention uor members of the state organizations wore consulted before the Republican candidate was indorsed by tho national com mittee. In closing his statement, he said: "An attempt by a small group of men to deliver the Progressive party organization organ-ization to the Republican candidate in a manner which violates one of the most fundamental principles of the Progressive Progres-sive party is an affront to the sincerity of all Progressives." |
