Show FOOD PIES Si TO BEJSS0IB1E British Subject Finds Conditions Condi-tions Nearly Normal in City of Hamburg. (Special Y'ar Dispatches of the International Interna-tional News Service and the London Times.) LONDON, Sept. IS. The London Times publishes the following from its correspondent at Hamburg, who is a British subject: "Hamburg, Sept. 10. From the very few newspaper reports which have found their way hera since the commencement com-mencement of hostilities and from the reports of persons who have recently returned re-turned from Kngland, the current view would seem to Dc that the conditions in Hamburg and in Germany generally is most deplorable. "The first week after the declaration declara-tion of war was devoted entirely to mobilization and, therefore, for the time being the aspect of the town was vastly altered, but during the last four weeks Hamburg and Altona have worn their usual aspect and things run on in the usual way. The trams" and trains now no longer are inordinately crowded and, with the exception, perhaps, that there are fewer persons about, it is impossible to detect any difference from ordinary times. "Reports that have been spread abroad that eatables are at famine prices, borders, as far as Hamburg is concerned, on the ridiculous. On the first day of hostilities prices for flour, salt, sugar, butter, rice, beans and meat were fied by the military authorities. These prices compare favorably, with the prices in times of peace. "Certain restrictions arc made with a view to economizing in coal, namely, the lighting of streets is not quite so lavish, cafes are closed at midnight and the tramway service ceases likewise at midnight. mid-night. "'The theaters are all open again for the winter plays, which are mostly of a patriotic nature. There have been "vague hints in the foreign press of unseemly treatment accorded foreigners here during dur-ing the war. These are pure fabrications, fabrica-tions, as the attitude here in Hamburg toward foreigners during the last six weeks invariably has been courteous and cdrrect, and personally I have not heard of a single complaint." |
