Show TRACK MORS ffi won Brraii Weather Keeps Many Athletes Away; Three Other Events Tomorrow. "When Coach Bcnnlon of the University of Utah called for the first .ovont in tho scheduled Interclass track and field meet yesterday, he had not enough men on the Job to complete the meet. Nino of the events were run off. however, and at tho end of tho ninth the freshmen had a lead which assures them first place, ovon though they lose tho remaining three events. Tho score now stands: Freshmen, C5: seniors, 11; sophomores, 6: Juniors, 0. Tho meet will bo completed Mondny. Tho weather was so cold and tho track In such poor condition that mo3t of the athletes who had registered for the meet failed to appear. The freshmen, however, had a good representation and took first plnco In every event, and all three places In two of them. It was - expected that the meet would shed some light on the strength of the varsity team, but the heavy track and apparent Indifference of tho athletes inado it Impossible to Judge tho strength of tho men with any degree of accuracy. Haymond Is Big Winner. Creed Haymond of the freshmen class, who Is probably the most sensational track athleto In tho stnto today, scored eleven points for his class and didn't ox-ert ox-ert himself In the least. From his work yesterday It would be Impossible to tell anything of his real strength. He look tho 100-yard dash with the greatest of ease, and after lagging along behind for a greater part of tho distance In the riuartcr-mlle he rounded the bunch nnd won without an effort. In the 220-yard 220-yard dash he got off to a poor start and loafed throughout tho course. He trotted In third. There were two mon who showed promise prom-ise of strength. They are Parkinson and Wilson of the freshmen class. They are the two who made such a beautiful finish In, the recent cross-country run, and It was In tho longer races that thov showed strength yesterday. Parkinson Wins Mile. Tho mile nice was won by Parkinson and was the best event of the day. Parkinson Par-kinson and Cutler, two experienced runners, run-ners, started out with Berry, an unknown un-known man. The three struck up a good clip, and In tho final sprint tho trio crossed the tape within four feet of each other. Parkinson's work was pretty all the way, and, although ho won by a "narrow "nar-row margin, he wns perfectly frosh at the close of the race, and doubtless could have outstripped his two opponents. Neither Cutler nor Berry showed any signs of fatigue, and with more practice both will bo dangerous men over a long route. Wilson ran a beautiful race In tho half mile. He led tho string for the first lap, but dropped behind Cutler on the second. In the final sprint "Wilson came around Cutler, and with a stronc spurt rounded Cutler and crossed the tapo five feet to the good. "Wilson Is In the best condition ho ever has been, and Is running In better form than e'er before. Ho also put up a beautiful beau-tiful fight for first place In tho quarter-mile, quarter-mile, hut was forced to glvo way at the tapo to Haymond's great speed. Van Pelt Stars. As far as dlstanco Is concerned, the work of Van Pelt In the broad Jump was the most encouraging of tho afternoon. All other events were won In slow time or short distances, but Van wont 20 feet 2i Inches. This Is not close to the state record, but It will mighty nearly take first place in tho event In tlie state meet. Jones rjut the shot thirty-five feet, taking tak-ing first place. This will not count for much In the stato meet, perhaps, but Jones Is new to the event, and with six weeks' training will be able to heavo It three or four feet farther and will then bo In lino for a placo.
