' Busiuess was admittedly quiet amoug tho merchants during tho past week, but there was no complaint, as it is now "between seasons and tho business houses do not expect a rushing trade until spriug. The big department stores, dry oods and clothing establishments continued their special sales at reduced re-duced rates, and did a fair business, but, according to the manager of one big institution, there was no rush and will not bo until the spring stocks are placed upon tho counters. Buyors in largo numbers are now in tho east laying in stocks for the spring trade, and these stocks are expected to be ready for inspection early next month. A big business in millinery is expectod early in the season, owing to lho fact that Eastor comes unusually enrly this year. Many of the Btorcs wore offering win-tor win-tor goods below cost during the week, but buyers wore scarce, not withstand-J ing tho great bargains offered. Painters and decorators are still doing do-ing a rushing business and the furniture furni-ture stores cxpoct a big advance in sales at an early date. |
