Show U. S. Will Not Pay Demurrage. WASHINGTON. March 8. A curious case of a charge for demurrage by tho Denver fc Rio Grande railroad against the federal government was decided today to-day by tho Interstate commcrco commission commis-sion in favor of the government. A bill of $440 for demurrage on various carload shipments of cement intended to be used by the reclamation service was presented to the government by tho railroad rail-road company. The government refused to pay the bill and brought a. complaint against the road to have tho account adjusted by tho commission. In lis opinion, Commissioner Prouty dissenting, the commission held that tho demurrage charges were not assessed In accordance with any provision In the. railroad tariffs and therefore, did not constitute a valid claim against the government. |
