Hinman of Binghampton, a staunch supporter sup-porter of tho policies of Governor Ilughes. as against Senator. Georgo A. Davis of Buffalo and Senator Georgo II. Cobb of Watertown. both regarded as opposed to Governor Hughes's policies. The conferonco early in tho clay seemed likely to give Cobb a majority of tho Republican votes for this office and tho immediate effect of tho telegram tele-gram wras tho adjournment of the mooting moot-ing without action until Thursday night. Tho governor has given no public expression ex-pression of opinion on tho Question of leadership, but it is known to havo favored fa-vored the election of Souator Ilinmau. Senator Hinman was one of the seven so-called "insurgent" senators who re-tsod re-tsod to sanction tho election of Senator Allds as president pro tempore. Senator Root's telegram reads in part as follows: "Tho selection of Senator Hinman is plainly indicated as tho only course winch will prcsont tho Republican party to the people of the state in a true light, will correctly exhibit tho real rolaUon of tho party as a wholo to tho principles and policies for which Governor Hughes stands and will rightly represent the wishes of tho voters of the party " |
