Show NOTHING EVIL, ALWAYS FAIR. We have an anonymous communication communica-tion from some one who signs himself "Samy," and claims to be from Indiana. Indi-ana. This gentleman appreciates The Tribune, claiming that it is "by far the best paper in the city," save for one thing. And in that one thing hc is clearly misled. The ily in the oinl-mcnt, oinl-mcnt, so far as he is concerned, is his notion that we have been printing "sIanderous;vattacks upon Tfooscvclt." Nothing of this kind has ever appeared in Tho Tribune. ' Tl may be that some of our envious and .jealous contemporaries contempo-raries have attributed such action to The Tribune, but, as is habitual with them whenever they may impute any such thing to Tho Tribune, that imputation impu-tation is false. It is quite true that, we have objected to President Tiooscvcll. We have stated our reasons plaiuly and fairly for the objections to which wo iravo ntfpr.mon There was nothing in the least "slanderous" "slan-derous" in any of this, and nothing in any way objectionable to any fair-minded fair-minded citizen. We consider that Mr. Ifooscvelt was a dangerous man as President, Pres-ident, because of his disregard for law, for the restraint of his official position, for his arbitrary way with Congress, his assault upon tho courts, and for his determination to rule. law or no law. At the same time, we recognize Mr. Jfooso-vclt's Jfooso-vclt's splendid courage, his immense vitality and energy, and the tremendous tremen-dous popularity ho has won for himself with tho American public. We consider that everything we have said aboii. Mir. Ifooscveit (not answering answer-ing for things that mnlioious contemporaries contempo-raries have falsely claimed that we said) has been perfectly legitimate in the way of public criticism and fair comment ou his public acts and public expressions. Wo think that "Samy" will concur with us on a calm consideration consider-ation of the whole matter, and that hc will continue to think, as hc is entirely justified in doing, that "The Tribune is by far the best paper in the city," and this without any modification or qualification whatever. |
