Theodore Uooscvelt; arrived here this evening on board the. steamer Admiral. Mr. Jtoosevelt was in tho best of health, as were all tho members of his, party. The Admiral entered Jvilin-cli Jvilin-cli ill harbor flying the American flag at her fore ami mainmasts. She dipped tho German ensign while passing the British cruiser Pandora, whose rails and masts were manned by cheering sailors. Tho people of Mombasa were in a great stale of expectancy throughout .the day and tho first word of the sighting sight-ing of tho ship brought them iu crowds to vantage points, whore they might catch a glimpse of tho distinguished visitor. Tho Admiral, however, came slowly up to the harbor and it was dark when -the ex-president, accompanied by his son. and the eupfuin. made a landing. They were brought' ashore in the commandant's com-mandant's surf-boat and carried to a plueo of shelter in chairs on natives' shoulders. There was a deluge of rain, but Mr. .Roosevelt said ho was glad to got ashore in any weather. Ho added that the start, for tho hunting grounds could not come a minute too soou. Tho governor's aide boarded the Admiral and extended a welcome to Mr. Uoo&cvelt, who received re-ceived another cordial greeting on shore from the provincial commissioner,, who conducted him to tho government house. Mr. Roosevelt seemed highly pleased when ho observed the military guard drawn up. The crowds ou shoro pressed eagerl3' forward to see him. These were composed of Europeans, Indians' and natives, and presented a picturesque appearance. The special train which will carry Mr. .Roosevelt and his companions to Alfred Al-fred Pease's ranch on the Athi river will leave tomorrow afternoon. The acting governor of the protectorate, protector-ate, Frederick ,f. Jackson, entertained Mr. Eoosevelt at dinner. Tomorrow, morning the "Roosevelt party will be taken in carriages about th'c town, aud as far as possible the governor and his associates will meet the special instruction in-struction from King Edward to show overy consideration to the distinguished t ravel ors. F. C. Selous, the noted' English hunter, was a guest at. the dinner, lie will accompany ac-company Mr. Roosevelt on his first shooting expedition at tho Pease ranch. |
