Show SENATOR STEWART'S DEATH. The death of .cx-Seuator William M. I Stewart of Nevada was a shock lo his 'many friends in this region, where he was so well known. Mr. Stewart, it seems, had gone to Washington lo undergo un-dergo an operation, and died following that operation. His body will be removed re-moved to Nevada for burial. Senator Stewart was born at Lyons. New York. August 0. LS27. He was, therefore, in his eighty-second year. He spout, his early child hood in Ohio, where ho received an academic education, and from whence he entered Yale college, but left it to go to California on hearing hear-ing of the gold discoveries, arriving in San Francisco in May, .1S50. lie mar ricd Annie E daughter of ex-Governor and ex-Senator Footc of Mississippi. His career as a mining magnate on the coast is well known. He was admitted lo the bar in ISH'2, district attorney the same year, attorney-general of California Califor-nia in ISo'l, and removed lo Virginia Cit Nevada, in 1SG0, where he again practiced law, and then became one of the great mining coterie of the Corn-stock. Corn-stock. He was a member of the Territorial Ter-ritorial Council in LS61. of the Constitutional Consti-tutional convention' in lS6o. He was United Slates Senator from IS63 lo 1S75, and again from J8S7 to !00. Since his retirement tho latter year from the Senate, he has been practicing law in the mining districts of Nevada, j Tonopah, Goldfield, aud Bullfrog, with j his residence in the latter place. ! Senator Stewart , was a lovable gentleman gen-tleman personally, and dealt with large things in a large way during his long life. He was a man who made few enemies, and he kept his friends to tho last. In his death a very notable figure of the early days passes away, and his loss will be deeply lamented in all tho Western States. |
