Show THE CHURCH ORGAN'S WAIL. The church organ on Thursday evening even-ing continued its wail against the American party and its tearful protestation protesta-tion that church activity in politics was all that Utah needed. It pointed to the glorious days of the past, when the priesthood had everything their own way,-and lamented that the inhabitants of Utah today were not able to see that that priestly control is pure Americanism. American-ism. The, confession of the church organ that, the priesthood had not been able to establish in Utah an American civil government is singular, indeed, in view of the fact that the priesthood never undertook to establish any such government, govern-ment, and never intended to. What they established, and what they meant to establish, was "the kingdom of God on earth," under supreme rule aud dictation dic-tation of the hicrarchs of the Mormon church. The News appears to be serenely se-renely indifferent and unconscious- in regard lo this matter, assuming as a matter of course, from its standpoint, that the priestly government was the right thiutr, and that any one who objects ob-jects to itic priestly control i'h politics, in business, and in civil affairs, is.uot a good American. Having dwelt in the odor and exclusivencss of priestly control for so many years, it seems lo imagine that that is the natural order, and that everybody should accept it. Objecting to the claim made by The Tribune that the progress here is primarily due to the triumph of the American parly and the ousting of ec- clesiasticism from municipal control, the News undertakes to apologize for the lack of progress manifested during the church dominance, and makes a sort of indefinite claim that what it calls "the strife" stopped the progress of Salt Lake, and it quotes the followiug as an evidence of tho truth of what it Salt. Lake, when, iu fact, that "strife" has been the making of the progressive city, and it quotes the following as an evidence of the truth of -what it says: Within the last six months one real estate es-tate firm in this city has refunded 530.000 on one trade ami has seen ?fi0,000 po elsewhere else-where in another case, merely on account of the discords constantly existing in our newspapers. One man from Denver had closed a deal and requested a return of his money merely because his little daughter was reading a certain dally and had got the Idea that this city was n hull-hole of immorality and crime. To which it is fair to say that undor the old domination of the priests there would have been n'o such trades or deals under negotiation. Everything would have been stagnant. I,t is not a matter" new to real estate men, or to business men, to find in the multitude of transactions that arc occurring in this city every month that there should be an occasional failure to complete the negotiations. But as to the idea of the little daughter of the man from Denver who wanted to back out of his bargain, we should say the probability proba-bility is that the notion sho obtained that the city was a "hell-hole" was derived de-rived from the Dcserct News tor from some one of the unscrupulous opposition opposi-tion newspapers, rather thau from The Tribune, as the. News undertook to imply in its editorial. For there is no doubt but the church organs, big aud little, havo been industriously disseminating dissemi-nating that idea about Salt Lake, in their railing and unfounded accusations accusa-tions against the American administration, administra-tion, against the police department, and against the conditions gonerally thnt exist. Those railings were complete misrepresentations, and we should not wonder if in some cases they have been a serious detriment to the progress and good name of the city. The only papcrs that havo been printing things that would load ono to suppose thnt Salt Lake City is a "hell-hole of immorality im-morality and crime" grc the opposition papers. And those havo been full of ' just that sort of tiling, without sense, reason, fairness or fact to support their vile accusations. And if any trade has fallen through on this account, those malignant and mendacious newspapers must bo blamed. With respect to tho establishment of truly American conditions in Utah, Hie News confesses that the priesthood has made an absolute failure from first lo Inst. And yet tho priesthood has been in supremo control all of the time. If it is true that they wanlod fo establish American conditions iu Utah, why has there- never been any evidence of that desire? Why is it that; the chief effort of th.e priesthood all the time has been directed against, the Government , lo defying and disregarding I lie law, lighting light-ing the peiml code, and endeavoring to maintain a theocratic rule here that was absolutely contrary to the institutions institu-tions and tho laws of the country? The News's confession -was not needed in order lo prove the absolute falsity of any contention that tho priesthood has ever intended at any lime to establish estab-lish a civil rule in Utah in accordance with tho spirit of American institutions. That is exactly what tho priesthood has always fought, has always objected to, and has always warded off wherever it was possible for it to do so. The only possibility for the establishment establish-ment of truly American conditions in Utnh is through the triumph of the principles of-the American parly. And these principles are bound to prevail. They are gaining all the time, and while they may HOt bc completely successful at tho next jicncral election in this Slate, it cannot possibly be very long until they will completely dominate Utah and free the people from the lawless law-less usurpations of a greedy, lecherous, and tyrannous priesthood. |
