Wilkes as national, organizer for Salt Lako City of Ihe American Federation of Labor. The appointment ap-pointment Avas made by President Samuel Sam-uel Gompers and the announcement came iu a personal letter from President Presi-dent Gompers lo A. JL Hurt, secretary of the Salt Lako Federation of Labor. Mr. Wilkes is a member of Carpenters' Carpen-ters' union LSJ of Salt Lake City. He has been an active Avorker in organized labor for several yeara and his appointment ap-pointment is a merited recognition of his Jealous service, lie is at present chairman of the arbitration committee of the Salt, Lake federation. The meeting of the Federal ion Friday evening was one of the most encouraging encourag-ing sessions ever held. Several letters from prominent Salt. Tho de-legates Avero optimistic concerning con-cerning Salt Lake's labor conditions and there were no serious complaints. An appeal from the national federation feder-ation asking for aid for the Swedish strikers was read. Attention was called to the unsettled labor conditions iu Sweden .and the hope expressed that out of the strikes iu thai, country here Avould result a belter understanding of tho labor conditions throughout the Avorld and that an international movement to settle conditions would 'be inaugurated. A communication was received from the sheet molal workers on strike against the V. S. Steel company asking for moral and financial support. .Notification .Noti-fication was received that the mechanics and helpers in the employ of the Baltimore Balti-more & Ohio railroad are on strike. Word was also received thai the boot and shoe makers union had settled its controversy with the "W. L. Douglas Shoe company to the mutual satisfaciou of the union and the company. Work Commondcd. Lcllcrs woro received from several prominent ' Salt Lake merchants congratulating con-gratulating the federation on its active campaign for tho betterment of working conditions among the retail clerks, The merchants were unanimous in the expression ex-pression of the belief in organized labor and said that they will urge their clerks to become members of the L'etail Clerk's union. Through a renresenfatiA'e tho plumber's plumb-er's union asked for their status iu the federaliou. The plumbers were suspended suspend-ed by the federation some lime ago for non-payment of dues and they are iioav planning to pay up their arrears and lo become re-instated in the federation. |
