GREEK MERCHANT IS GIVEN LIGHT SENTENCE .Special to The Tribune. OliDKN, Nov. 12. George Grucus. a Greek merchant at Five Points, was this morning fined $-10 with an option ol spending a similar number of days m tlio city .iuil for having sold tobacco to an inmate of Iho Slate Industrial sc-hool. . . The Greek appeared in court and pleaded guilty to the charge, but explained ex-plained Hull, ho was ignorant ot any law prohibiting the sale of tobacco to bovs. Tlio court, in passing sentence, declared that ho had taken into consideration consid-eration the ignorance of tho torciguer rogarding tho statutes of tho stale, and would make tho senteuco lighter for this reason. . Judge Murphy also declared that the sentence passed on the Greek must, not bo taken as a precedent by others who arc gniltv of the same law. as he would have given the defendant, the maximum fine of $100 if ho hoo boon more conversant with the. law and the English language.
